History - present time In 1931 Giproazotmash Institute was established in Leningrad to provide chemical industry with equipment and, thereby, to strengthen the defence capacity of the country. In those years, the work was focused on creation of equipment operating under high pressures and at low temperatures, which paved the way to mastering low-temperature engineering in our country.
In 1946, an affiliate of NIIñhimmach was organized on the basis of Giproazotmash, and in 1965 it was transformed in an independent organization - LenNIIñhimmash, which favoured fast development of the institute, its quantitative and qualitative growth. The distinct specialization was defined, namely, reactors and polymerizers, low-temperature gas-separation and gas-mix purification facilities, apparatus with mixing devices, furnaces for chemical production, large piston compressors and installations. At that time, the first domestic ultra-high-pressure ethylene compressor for 1500-2000 atm was created.

Such compressors were used in the first domestic plant for production of low-density polyethylene. LenNIIñhimmash was the first in the industry to supply complete process lines. Successfully operating now are large-capacity plants developed by the institute: EP-300 for production of ethylene at Lisichansk petroleum refinery, Ukraine; Tomsky NHK; for production of low-density polyethylene at plants in Novopolotsk, Belarus, and Leuna Werke, Germany.
One of the important directions of the institute activity was the development of the large-capacity poor helium content (0,055%) natural gas processing plant project of 3 billion m3/year as to processed gas (1,5 mln. m3/year as to helium) with separation of helium concentrate, ethane and wide fraction of light hydrocarbons for Orenburg helium plant.
The chief of this unique to complexity of engineering problems plant was a talented engineer, the chief designer of helium plants of Chemical Machinery Ministry, Igor Leonidovich Andreev. During the development of the complex engineering equipment more than 25 inventions protected by inventors certificates of the USSR were created.
In 1977 colossal efforts of work collectives participated in constructions of Orenburg helium plant were concluded by installation of the1-st turn of first unit. The group of the institute staff members became State Award winners.

Contacts with foreign firms were extended. Complete process lines for extraction, drying, shaping and packing of synthetic rubbers were supplied to China, India and Bulgaria; equipment for nickel concentrate processing plants was delivered to Turkey and Cuba. Process equipment was developed and supplied also within the scope of international projects, in cooperation with "Power Gas", "John Brown", etc., and with companies and organizations of Germany, India, Czechia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, Sweden, Finland and CIS countries. Years of intensive efforts of all specialists who worked at the institute in different years allowed the firm to occupy leading positions in various branches of domestic engineering and to gain international recognition.
In years of Perestroika the institute management succeeded in retaining of the collective of specialists, reference direction of activity, providing for generation continuity, substantially renewing of engineering equipment and the nomenclature of fulfilled works.
In 2003 for further development of the institute and its test-laboratory and manufacturing base a 10-storey engineering building was purchased by the directorate of LENIICHIMMASH Ltd from Naval Plant “Almaz”.
At present the institute, celebrated the 75 Anniversary in 2006, is transformed into the diversified engineering enterprise carrying out research, designing, manufacturing and turnkey delivery both separate types of equipment, complete processing lines and whole plants.
In 1997 the propane-butane mixture production system with annual capacity of 3 billion m/sup> of natural gas in Karshi, Uzbekistan was put into operation. In 2008 3-th and 4-th round at UDP Shurtanneftegas, Uzbekistan were started and they made it possible manufacturing of 6 billion m3 of natural gas additionally.
At this stage the systems have achieved expected productive efficiency. In such a way three manufacturing lines were made upon our projects and one more line is made as our prototype.
Thus the execution plan of reconstruction of helium unit ¹ 1 of the first stage of Orenburg helium plant has been completed. Designs of the second and the third stages are on the stage of agreement.
The engineering design of Sayansky helium plant for helium separation from natural gas of Kovyktinskoye gas-condensate field in the Eastern Siberia has been accomplished, i.e. the traditional themes of the institute are recommenced – separation helium from natural gas.
The most important event of the jubilee year for the institute became setting in operation of the associated petroleum gas installation fulfilled by our technology and design with a capacity of 3,0 billion m3/year that was carried out in JSC Surgutneftegaz. Resulting marketable products: methane fraction, technical propane-butane, broad fraction of light hydrocarbons, stable gasoline.
During creation of the gas separation technology the energy-conserving method of associated petroleum gas separation with turbo-expander unit (TEU) use developed by research workers of the institute was applied. (RF Patent ¹ 2225971, date of priority 20.03.2004).
By the design of torch gases utilization with the capacity up to 60 million m3/year with extraction of power gas, liquefied gas and elemental sulfur, fulfilled for JSC “Kondensat” (t. Uralsk), the institute with Kazakhstan enterprises recommenced themes having much need in the market – gas with high sulphur content cleaning and processing.
The full profiled plant supplied with complex equipment including installation work was realized at CJSC Severorgsintez. Operation documents for the natural gas manufacturing plant for East Urengoy and North Esetin oil and gas field were developed. At the same time LENNIICHIMMASH Ltd is performing construction of the plant with equipment designing, producing and delivering.
Works for perfection of structures and technologies of manufacturing of heat exchange and capacitive equipment including air cooling apparatus have been continuing; production of jalousie type original separation devices for high-performance gas cleaning from dropping liquid has been organized; the compressor equipment park has been updated; branch state standards for heat-exchange equipment including air-cooling devices, compressors have been developed. Series procedures of technical diagnosis of equipment for characterization of operation residual life have been developed. The work for high-precision membrane safety devices for preventive valves protection including with fluoroplastic and metal antirust coating of membranes is carried out. Membranes part-throw holes loosing is accomplished with the help of high-technological laser complex.
Last years LENNIICHIMMASH Ltd actively develops engineering direction of the institute operation. Disposing in its composition the diversified design-engineering department that can develop engineering designs in all main types of equipment and the equipment department the institute can make technical and commercial offers for equipment procurement on turnkey basis, for performance of inspections and equipment acceptance at manufacturing plants; for execution of equipment certificates and receiving necessary permissive documentation being based on the source data of the basic designs. In one’s turn that allows to shorten substantially the normative time of commissioning of industrial projects and accordingly to enhance the economic efficiency of capital investment. Many projects fulfilled in the institute contain structurally new engineering solutions developed on the level of inventions and utility models and covered by patents of the Russian Federation.
The striking example of such projects realization is the effective cooperation of LENNIICHIMMASH Ltd and JSC Kazanorgsintez. Since 2005 the institute stands as the general supplier of equipment of JSC Kazanorgsintez for the reconstruction of the high –density polyethylene processing and production plant and the ethylene production plant as well as for construction of Bisphenol A and Policarbonates new plants altogether over 600 pieces of equipment. The cost of the delivered equipment is greatly lower the cost of foreign companies offers.
At the present day all institute sections use third-dimensional designing methods which afford to speed up work performance and improve papers quality.
As the expert organization licensed by Rostehnadzor the institute has a great experience in execution works in appraisal of industrial safety. Availability of the attest testing laboratory for certifying in the institute allows to carry out the complex of works providing reception of certificates of conformance and permissions for application of technical devices at hazardous manufacturing entities.
The institute has licenses and allowances for all kinds of activity, issued by Federal Agency on Construction and Housing Communal Services, Rostehnadzor as well as the Evidence on accreditation as the expert organization.
